How to Open an EMEX Account
- Enter the registration area by clicking the Register button in the Get Optimized Pricing tab of the homepage.
- Complete the registration form to grant EMEX permission to obtain energy usage records from your utility company. Your EMEX account will be custom tailored to match your company's specific usage pattern and load profile. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of your account activation along with a username and password within 24 hours.
- You will now be able to access your account by entering your username and password in the Log In tab of the Homepage. Your custom profile will have optimized rates that can be locked in at any time.
Note: To look at indicative rates in your region, enter in your zip code on the Homepage.
How to secure a Fixed Rate
- In the Fixed Rate table of the Rate Board, you can compare the offers of up to ten Retail Electricity Providers for terms of 3-60 months. Graphical analysis of the different providers’ varying prices for each term can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate graph icon located underneath the Chart column. Registered user can view sample contracts for any provider by clicking the contract icon underneath the Terms of Service column.
- To select a contract term length to view, press one of the listed terms and the rate board will automatically populate with pricing from all available providers for that term. Note: all terms are listed in months.
- To secure a fixed rate contract and lock in the listed rate, click the corresponding radio button for the provider you want under the Lock In column, and then press Select.
- A window will open to confirm your request. Select Confirm to continue or Cancel to go back to the Rate Board.
- Most requests will be executed within 60 seconds.* A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you with the details of your order after it has been processed.
- The confirmation e-mail will have an attachment containing an official agreement for the selected fixed rate. Print out the agreement, sign and fax it to 713-583-9519.
- You will promptly receive notification with a receipt for the signed agreement.
- Once the signed agreement is received, the EMEX takes care of the rest. When your contract start date begins, you will begin to receive invoices from the new energy provider.
- The next time you log into your EMEX account, the Rate Board will display new prices beginning the date your newly purchased contract expires. At any time, you can lock in additional rates for a future contract.
*The rate is not guaranteed until the order is confirmed. If there is volatility in the gas market at the time of the request, rates may increase. Should this occur, it will be displayed on the Rate Board and the rate requested will no longer be available. You will have the option to execute an order for an alternate rate or to keep processing your request for the lower rate until gas prices decline or trading hours end.
How to secure a MCPE/Variable Rate
- The MCPE/ Variable Rate table displays rates offered by up to ten Retail Electricity Providers for terms of 3-60 months. Graphical analysis of the different providers’ variable rate averages for each term can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate graph icon located underneath the Chart column. Registered users can view a sample contract for any provider and term combination available by selecting the respective contract icon underneath the Terms of Service column.
- To select a contract term length to view, select one of the listed terms and the rate board will automatically populate with pricing from all available providers for that term. Note: all terms are listed in months.
- To secure a variable rate contract and lock in its fixed-cost adder value, click the corresponding radio button for the provider you want under the Lock In column, and then press Select.

- Most orders will be executed within 60 seconds.* A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you with the details of your order after it has been processed.

Past performance does not guarantee future performance on variable rate averages, but it may be an indicator. Variable rates traditionally run as much as 20% lower than fixed rates, but prices could spike due to supply and demand, extreme weather, or other factors.
*The fixed-cost adder price is not guaranteed until the order is confirmed. If there is volatility in the gas market at the time of the request, the adder may increase. Should this occur, it will be displayed on the Rate Board and the adder price requested will no longer be available. You will have the option to execute an order for an alternate variable rate adder or to keep processing your request for the lower adder until gas prices decline or trading hours end.
How to secure a Heat Rate
Companies that spend at least $50,000 annually on electricity can purchase Heat Rates.
- In the Heat Rate table of the Rate Board, you can compare the heat rate offers of up to ten Retail Electricity Providers for terms of 12-60 months. Graphical analysis of the different providers’ rates for each month can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate graph icon located underneath the Chart column To browse and compare, select a provider and term from the dropdown menu in the top left part of the screen. To the left and right of the header, titled "Heat Rate Index", you can see each provider's adder and multiplier, respectively, for the term selected.
- Before you can secure any monthly rates, you will need to sign up with a provider for a designated term. This will lock in your multiplier and adder. To do this, display the preferred provider and term in the two dropdown menus and choose the Select button at the bottom of the heat rate table. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you.
- The confirmation e-mail will have an attachment containing the chosen heat rate agreement for the selected energy provider and term. Print out the agreement, sign it and fax to 713-583-9519.
- When the signed agreement is received, you will be sent an e-mail confirming that you will be able to secure rates for as many individual months within the term of your contract as you chose at any time.*
- The next time you log onto the EMEX and access your account's Heat Rate Table, the provider and term you agreed to will automatically be displayed. You can now select one or more of the months you want to secure a rate for by
- To lock in monthly rates, click the check box located in the "Lock In" column of the month(s) you are securing a rate for. Choose the Select button to complete your order.
- A window will open up to confirm you request. Select Confirm to continue or Cancel to go back to the Heat Rate Board.
- Most orders will be executed within 60 seconds.** A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you with the details of your order.
- The next time you log into EMEX, the "Heat Rate Index" table will display the rates for the months you have already locked in. You can continue to lock in rates for additional months at any time.
* Any month's rate can be locked in at any time up to three days before that month comes into effect, at which point the rate is automatically locked-in at whatever price the prompt month ended on. No penalties or extra charges are incurred if this happens.
** The rate is not guaranteed until the order is confirmed. If there is volatility in the market, gas prices can increase and so the requested rate will no longer be available. In such cases, you will have the option to execute an alternate rate or to keep your request processing until the end of the business day.
